Stride is a social step leaderboard for small groups of friends. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it. We tried to write it like humans.
What we collect
Account information. When you sign in with Apple, we receive your name (if you share it) and a unique Apple identifier. We store your display name, a username you choose, and your account ID.
Step data. With your permission, we read your daily step count from Apple Health (HealthKit). We store step totals per day to power the leaderboard. We do not read any other health data — no heart rate, sleep, weight, or anything else.
Contacts. If you choose to find friends by contacts, your phone numbers are hashed (SHA-256) on your device before they leave it. We never see or store your raw phone numbers — only the hashes, which are used to match you with other Stride users.
Push notification token. To send you notifications (surpass alerts, friend requests, weekly results), we store your device's APNs token.
Motion activity. If you enable the "on the move" indicator, we use your device's motion sensor (Core Motion) to detect walking. This is processed locally and only a boolean state (active/not active) is shared with friends. We do not store motion data.
Usage analytics. We use PostHog to collect anonymized usage events (e.g., "leaderboard viewed", "friend request sent"). These events contain no personally identifiable information and are used to understand how the app is being used.
How we use your data
To display your step count on the leaderboard for your friend group
To assign weekly and daily awards based on your rankings
To match you with friends using hashed contact information
To send push notifications you've opted into
To improve the app based on anonymized usage patterns
HealthKit
Stride uses HealthKit to read your step count. Per Apple's requirements and our own commitment:
Your HealthKit data is never used for advertising or sold to third parties
Your HealthKit data is not shared with data brokers
HealthKit data is used only to power the leaderboard features described above
Data sharing
We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We share data only with the following service providers who help us run the app:
Supabase — our database and authentication provider (US-based)
PostHog — anonymized analytics (US-based)
Apple — push notifications delivered via APNs
We may disclose data if required by law, but we will notify you if legally permitted to do so.
Data retention
We retain your data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account (available from the Profile screen in the app), all your data — including step logs, friend connections, badges, and account information — is permanently deleted within 24 hours.
Your rights
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Profile screen in the Stride app. You can also email us at hey@stridesteps.app to request data deletion or a copy of your data.
Children
Stride is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
